A question we’re commonly asked at Doncaster Quickmix is “Is screed better than concrete?”. The fact is that both materials can play very important roles in your project. Screed is frequently used to provide a top layer finish once the concrete has been laid down. However, it can be a great match for other projects too. Screed may be better than concrete in some scenarios, but it largely depends on what you need the material for. We are always here to help whether you need concrete or screed in Rossington.

What are the differences between screed and concrete?

The key difference between the two is strength. Concrete is a much stronger material than screed. Whilst screed is weaker, it may be more suitable if you need a top-layer finish. Even though they are manufactured from the same three core ingredients – cement, water and aggregates – it’s stronger due to very coarse aggregates being added to the mix. Screed has much finer aggregates than concrete, making it smoother.

They both look very similar, so much so that it can be hard to tell which material is which from a distance. Although they look alike from afar, if you look closely screed will look finer once the drying process is complete. The reason they look different up close is because of the coarseness of the aggregate. Concrete is rougher in texture, and the aggregates can reach 20mm. The aggregates in screed are normally around 4 to 5mm.

Screed and concrete normally serve two different functions, with the former complimenting the latter by acting as a finishing layer. This is why the question “is screed better than concrete” often appears to be an irrelevant one. They are often combined during projects.

Should I use screed or concrete? Concrete Floor Insulation in Doncaster

When you combine screed and concrete, you can achieve the ideal balance of strength and smoothness. However, if strength is what you are looking for and you don’t require a smooth finish, you may be served well by concrete alone. If strength isn’t a big priority, screed could suffice for your project. Another benefit of using screed is that it’s easy to apply it evenly with a trowel. You shouldn’t need a great deal of experience to work with screed successfully. However, if your project involves concrete, it may be best to turn to a professional with specialist equipment who can mix and apply it. Concrete is normally the best choice for construction and structural projects.

What is concrete best for?

Concrete tends to be better for foundations, driveways and roads plus paths with a great deal of foot traffic. It’s also great for walls, car parks, flooring projects and general construction and structural projects. Screed is great for adding a top floor to concrete floors and for underfloor heating systems. This is because of its excellent insulating properties.

What else can I add to screed and concrete?

You can add other ingredients to screed or concrete if you wish. Some people add mixtures that can either slow down or quicken setting times. You can also add a plasticiser to make the mixture more damp-proof. This can also enhance boding to base layers. Extra fibres can reduce the risk of cracking.

Whether you’re thinking about ordering screed or concrete, make sure the material comes with a BSI certificate. You also need to make sure the supplier has a great reputation. Don’t simply go for the cheapest option available to you as this may mean compromising on quality.
